What the checker looks at
A resume that works in other countries often fails in Japan for reasons that have nothing to do with your experience. These are the ten things the checker scores, the same things a recruiter in Japan notices first.
Japanese format
Whether your document follows the Rirekisho and Shokumu Keirekisho structure employers in Japan expect, with sections in the usual order. A good Western-style resume still scores low here.
Basic information
Name with furigana, date of birth, address, phone and email. These are standard on a Japanese resume even though many countries leave them out.
Dates
Every school and job needs a year and a month, written in one calendar style, with no unexplained gaps.
Education and work history
Education with entry and graduation dates, and a work history that says what you did and what came of it, with numbers where you have them.
Self-PR and motivation
A Self-PR that is about you rather than a list of adjectives, and a motivation statement that explains why this company. Most resumes from abroad have neither.
Japanese quality
Natural business Japanese with a consistent polite style. Machine-translated phrasing is easy for a native reader to spot.
Visa and language level
Your visa status and Japanese level are the first things a Japanese employer checks for an international candidate. If they are missing, your resume may not be read further.
ATS readability
Whether an applicant tracking system can read your file: selectable text, clear headings, and nothing lost inside tables, columns or graphics.
Checking against a specific job
Recruiters in Japan, and the applicant tracking systems many companies use, compare your resume with the job description. When you paste it, the checker lists the skills it asks for and marks each as matched or missing, so you can see what to bring forward before you apply. It never suggests adding experience you do not have.
Common questions
Is the Japanese Resume Checker really free?
Yes. One check is free with no account. After that we ask you to create a free account, which also lets you build a Rirekisho and Shokumu Keirekisho from your resume.
Is my resume stored?
No. Your file is read to produce the score and then discarded. We do not save the file, its text, or the job description.
My resume is in English. Can I still use it?
Yes. The checker reads resumes in any language. An English resume will usually score low on Japanese format and Japanese quality, because most employers in Japan expect a Rirekisho and a Shokumu Keirekisho in Japanese. The fixes tell you what is missing.
What is the difference between a Rirekisho and a Shokumu Keirekisho?
A Rirekisho is a standardized form with your personal details, education and employment dates. A Shokumu Keirekisho is a free-form document describing what you did in each job and what you achieved. Most mid-career applications in Japan need both.
Does the checker tell me to add a photo?
The checker reads the text of your file, so it cannot see a photo. A Rirekisho normally carries one; if you are applying in Japan, plan to include a proper ID-style photo.
How accurate is the score?
The score is produced by AI following the conventions Japanese recruiters apply. It is a useful second opinion and a checklist of what to fix. It is not a guarantee of an interview.
